Ways to Use Figurative Language in Writing

Ways to Use Figurative Language in WritingWays to Use Figurative Language in WritingFigurative language, also called a figure of speech, isa word or phrase that departs from literal language to express comparison, add emphasis or clarity, or make the writing more interesting with the addition of color or freshness. Metaphors and similesare the two most commonly used figures of speech, but hyperbole, synecdoche, and personification are also figures of speech that are in a good writers toolbox. A metaphor compares two things by suggesting that one thing is anotzu sich The United States is a melting pot.A simile compares two things by saying that one thing is like another My love is like a red, red rose.Hyperbole is a form of exaggeration I would die without you.Synecdoche is a literary device that uses the part to refer to the whole The crown has declared war rather than The king (or the government) has declared war.Personification involves giving non-living things the attributes of a l iving thing The car is feeling cranky today. Figurative language enhances your fiction if its used competently and can be an economical way of getting an image or a point across. But if its used incorrectly, figurative language can be confusing or downright silly a true mark of an amateur writer. Figurative language can also be described as rhetorical figures ormetaphorical language whichever term you use, these are called literary devices. Why Figurative Language Is Important to Good Writing Figurative language can transform ordinary descriptions into evocative events, enhance the emotional significance of passages and turn prose into a form of poetry. It can also help the reader to understand the underlying symbolism of a scene or more fully recognize a literary theme. Figurative language in the hands of a talented writer is one of the tools that turn ordinary writing into literature. How to Use Figurative Language Effectively There is no one right way to use figurative language. That said, there are many ways to use figurative language poorly. Bear a few rules in mind when use metaphors, similes, and other literary devices Always know why you are using figurative language. Why say our love is dead rather than I dont love you anymore? Does the expression sound right in your characters mouth? Does it fit your tone and style? If not, dont use it.Choose your figures of speech carefully. Yes, you can write her beauty hit me in the eye like a squirt of juice from a grapefruit, but how would such a simile enhance your fiction or expand upon the meaning of your work? Perhaps you have a character with serious communication issues for whom it would be appropriate otherwise, skip it. Use figurative language sparingly. A paragraph that is loaded with similes and metaphors can be dense and difficult to understand. Select the figures of speech that serve your purpose (enhancing mood, meaning or theme), but dont use figurative language simply because you can.If you are using figurative language as dialogue, be sure it is appropriate for that character. Avoid putting flowery phrases into the mouths of characters who speak plainly. One very good way to explore figurative language is to read it as written by some of the great literary figures. As you pick up a book by Charles Dickens, Ernest Hemingway or Thomas Wolfe, for instance, use a highlighter to mark how these writers used different forms of figurative language and note how it ?fits with their writing style as a whole. This technique will help you to understand how and why it is used and learn how to better integrate it into your own writing.

Stop Looking for a Job

Stop Looking for a JobStop Looking for a JobThe best way to get a job is to connect with people outside of your need for a job.The best way to get a job is to not look for one. Does that idea sound crazy? Its true, and Ive shared it with my clients for years. That doesnt mean sit on your backside eating bonbons watching reality shows. It simply means its critical to find reasons to meet with people outside of your need for a job.Take a case in point. A client of mine welches a high-level, VP-marketing type. We had completed his preliminary career inventory work so he understood his unique value and patterns of success we even branded him in an authentic yet catchy way. He proceeded to knock on back doors the way he had been taught - to research and relationship-build. Yet he still allowed survival-mode desperation to seep into his conversations. His hints werent overt, but a tone of fear-based neediness limited his results. One day he said, Darrell, through all the introspective work weve done, something has become clear I have entrepreneurism in my blood. My father was an entrepreneur. His father was an entrepreneur. My brothers and sisters are all entrepreneurial. So Ive come to this conclusion To heck with these corporate jobs - Im going to start my own business. He went on to purchase a couple of franchises and was happier than ever.Once he stopped needing a job, interesting events started to occur.Without even pushing, he began receiving calls from folks he had met during his campaign. He also fielded unexpected calls on the resume he had placed in cyberland. With no attachment to landing an interview, he discussed frankly the opportunities people presented to him. In one instance, he told a hiring manager over the phone, In all honesty, the role and compensation youre describing is simply far below anything Id consider, so I dont want to waste your time by getting together. The hiring manager responded that he would be more than willing to come up signifi cantly if he could find someone of such high caliber and basically pleaded with him to come in and meet.He went in and opened some further doors for himself, but thats not the point. What matters is that when he de-desperatized himself - removed all neediness from his conversations and demeanor - the world responded immediately. His internal sense-of-value shift caused an external awareness-of-value shift. He called me to say he finally understood what I had been trying to impart for so many months. Withoutneed glaring through everything he did, and by simply focusing on building authentic relationships, the world was practically begging him to come out and play.A quote from Franz Kafka sums up this principle nicelyYou do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet, still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet. However, althoug h I believe that whatever we seek is seeking us at the same time, we have to get out and connect with it. No sitting at your table here. The way to stay completely outside the crowd of job seekers is never to enter it - even if you really need a job.Rather than write cover letters saying, in effect, I need a job, or setting up meetings to discuss your need for a job, turn your outreaches into something less me-oriented.How about setting up meetings to explore and get answers on areas of your passionate interest? What about becoming a thought leader in a specific field?Guess what? The folks in jobs right now have to focus on those jobs. So they wont be as up on everything going on in the industry as you could be, with all of your time to research and gather information. What if you became so knowledgeable and informed that people wanted to meet with you to get the skinny on things they are too busy to keep up with themselves? What if you went into meetings bearing gifts (knowledge or information) rather than only because you want something from them (a job)? Do you think it might create a different feel for your meetings?Understand that if you are branded well and fly a flag of who you are when you meet people, you never need to ask for a job. If they see value in you and are attracted to the flag youre flying, they will find whatever they can for you automatically. Simply find reasons to connect and ask for a few minutes. Meet people in a memorable way ( personal brand ) and maintain those relationships to stay top of mind. Youll have so many members of your career net attuned to you that nothing will slip through without your hearing about it.

Why Women Should Use Upspeak to Their Advantage - The Muse

Why Women Should Use Upspeak to Their Advantage - The MuseWhy Women Should Use Upspeak to Their Advantage Youve probably seen (at least) some of the constant complaints that women just talk wrong, all the time.If so, youre probably wondering what were doing thats so terrible. Sometimes its vocal fry- talking in a low, fried-sounding voice. Oh, but do note that if we talk normally, without vocal fry, we are annoyingly high-pitched. Other times its saying just (really). Or, of course, upspeak. (My name is Jennifer? Im the new project manager?)(Note Theres mora going on here than just gender- this piece notes that uptalk is not typically associated with African-American women, while this article notes differences in how English is spoken internationally.)The feminist internet has handled this with aplomb (here, here, here, here, here, here, and- hilariously- here), both sarcastically dispatching with these complaints, as well as providing trenchant criticism of the not-so-veiled misogyn y inherent in these charges. So let me just add one thing These vocal techniques can be a tool to get things done. And as with all tools, using these vocal techniques at the wrong time can lead to undesired results. So, I want to talk about how and when to use stereotypically female speech patterns effectively for your own purposes. The Many Uses of UptalkMen and women frequently use upspeak to indicate that somethings sort of a question, but wed honestly really like the person to agree with the stated option. Should we meet at 2? allows for many acceptable answers, while Were meeting at 2? indicates that the meeting will take distributionspolitik at 2 PM unless you have a serious objection. In a 2013 New York Times piece, researchers reported that both men and women used uptalk when giving declarative statements, for the purpose of confirming that theyre being understood. (Turn left at the light?)Perhaps more importantlyUptalk, the researchers found, could also serve a strategic pur pose through a technique known as floor-holding, in which the speaker, anticipating an interruption by the listener, tries to stave it off by using a rising tone at the end of a statement. Floor-holding is the vocal equivalent of holding up your palm, as if to say, Wait, Im not finishedSince women often report being interrupted more (see How to Get Heard in Meetings), a defense mechanism against interruption seems more than reasonable.Youre probably already using upspeak for many of these purposes. When could we maybe use it more deliberately?Creating Quality in an Inherently Unequal Situationfruchtwein of the vocal techniques women are criticized for do in fact put you in a non-dominant position. Non-dominant doesnt necessarily mean subordinate- sometimes it means deliberately equal. Why would you want to be in a non-dominant- or even momentarily subordinate- position?OMG, lots of reasons. First, equality is just good for its own sake. More specifically, is it your job to help peop le, or gently persuade them? If youre a teacher, counselor, trainer, or nurse, your effectiveness depends on putting people at ease, and it puts people at ease to lower yourself to a peer level. And if youre a journalist, spy, or health inspector, lowering yourself to the level of total non-threat- someone of little consequence, left to observe in the background- is of obvious value.I teach GRE and GMAT math to adults. These are college graduates and professionals, some of whom work on Wall Street. A lot of people have what I like to call math trauma. That is, theyre pretty sure theyre smart- until someone brings up math, and then theyre right back in third grade.I use upspeak and just literally all the time when teaching math, in order to create and maintain a sense of ease and equality. This assures students- without having to say it, which would be hella awkward- that Im not here to lord my skills over them or make them feel dumb. You cant divide out the x because we dont know it might be equal to zero, so instead you just factor it out? Ooh, thats a gentle suggestion. Now its your turn Yay mathSocratic QuestioningThe Socratic method is a way of leading someone to a conclusion by only speaking in questions, causing that person to have to get there via his own answers. In real life, the actual Socratic method can be extremely annoying.Uptalk is sort of the Diet Coke version of the Socratic method.Back to my math example If I just tell you to square both sides of an equation, youre probably going to do it without question, because Im the teacher. If I say, So well square both sides?, it keeps you on your toes. I like to add a little bit of doubt (and, occasionally, I do make mistakes), so even when Im giving a direction or stating a fact, were collaborating. To Bond With Young PeopleApparently, old people have much more negative reactions to vocal fry. From Amanda Hess on Slate While people like tend to think that the inflection makes women sound bored, obnoxi ous and mindless, college aged students, after listening to a recording of a woman who spoke with a vocal fry, determined that the speaker was professional, urban, looking for her career, not yet a professional, but on her way there and that the affectation was a prestigious characteristic of contemporary female speech.Want to hang with the young people? A little bit of vocal fry- if its natural to you anyway- is probably a good move. I sometimes teach young people. I can do one voice while teaching, and then another after class when I stay and answer questions. Young adults are perfectly able to appreciate that older people have a professional self and a more natural self, and slipping into a relaxed voice (but not telling all the details of your wild weekend) is just the right amount of intimacy to create a close and supportive relationship with students. This isnt specific to teaching. There are plenty of reasons you could want to bond with young people. One good reason is that yo u might want be selling a product or service. A better reason is that at some point you will be old, and they will be in charge. To Prod Others Along With Their Deadlines and ObligationsJust is commonly used when someone is late with something. Everyone knows that. Hey, I just want to follow up is a concise way of saying, I dont want to be a jerk, but you should have taken care of this by now.In fact, adding just is actually MORE aggressive than notCould you follow up on that email I sent you last Friday? (Threat level 2/10)Could you just follow up on that email I sent you last Friday? (Threat level 5/10)From Lesley Kinzel on XOJane, about using uptalk to the same effectI use uptalk as a way of saying, I expect you to respond to this. Ive never thought of this as exerting pressure, but having given it more consideration, that is absolutely what I am doing. By offering my points as questions, I am all but demanding that the listener answer them, and exploiting powerful social conditio ning that it is rude to leave a pointed question ignored, especially when it comes from someone in a position of authority. To Get People to Keep Telling You ThingsLet me give you an example. Elliot, who was hired two weeks after me to do the same job? Hes feeling very comfortable right now. Hes telling me a story about getting hired. Were bonding. Hes getting to the part of the story about salary negotiation. I want to know how much money he makes so I know if Im being treated unfairly and/or should ask for a raise. Time for vocal fry, upspeak, and just all at once. The message I am not a threat. Tell me everything. And then you get the information and use it to make more money. And finallyTalk Like (Many) Young Women to Get Young Women as CustomersI do.Its just obvious?Photo of woman courtesy of Shutterstock

How Australias Ageing Population Will Impact Our Industries

How Australias Ageing Population Will Impact Our Industries How Australias Ageing Population Will Impact Our IndustriesPosted June 13, 2018, by Career FAQs team The Australian Government predicts that people aged 65 and over will comprise 22 per cent of the bevlkerung by 2056. This means that over the next 38 years we can expect our retirement-aged population to increase by nearly 5 million people. Such a demographic shift is going to present the country with a range of challenges. But where there are challenges, there are also opportunities. The ageing population will influence how a wide range of industries operate in the future. And those industries will need adaptive, agile and creative professionals to innovate and find solutions to the challenges faced. So how are some of these industries preparing for that future? And what sort of issues will the students of today be tackling when they enter the workforce? Connecting older people to communities Social work plays a key r ole in helping people retain a good quality of life as they get older. Robin Harvey, a lecturer in the Master of Gerontology at Charles Sturt University (CSU), explained some of the key aspects that social workers in the future will face with regards to an ageing population. A key thing for elderly people is the capacity to stay in their home. This is what most people want to do, and what the government would like them to do as well because it is cheaper to look after older people in their own homes than provide full residential care for them. But in order for that to work well, you need communities that have resources that can sustain people. That means things like suitable housing for older people, ensuring the walkability of the community, sufficient public transport (particularly in rural areas), and good www connections to help people stay in touch with one another. Thats all important for healthy social connections. Social isolation is very detrimental to health. And old er people have a lot to contribute. Lots of people in retirement have time and experience to offer. But if they are restricted from getting around or communicating effectively, not only do they suffer from social isolation, their expertise is underutilised. Social workers are involved in helping people and communities with these issues, and advocating for policies and resources that ensure it can happen. Ms Harvey also pointed out that such considerations actually benefit communities as a whole. Improving these things is not just about elderly people the things you would do for them would have multiple values across different social sectors. Better, cheaper public transport, for instance, would help elderly people, but also mean that lower income families and mothers with young children could get around more easily again reducing social isolation and aiding a sense of community. What benefits older people is often good for all of us. Shifts in demographics means healthcare exp ands The ageing population will also present career opportunities in the field of healthcare from gerontology to nursing as outlined by Maree Bernoth, Associate Professor of Nursing at CSU. The growing number of older people means that healthcare workers can work with people from preconception right through the lifespan so that patients have quality of life throughout their lives. Thats exciting for healthcare workers. More people living longer is a sign of a successful society, but we want people to age so they dont have co-morbidities and chronic health problems that some of our current older cohort of people have. And as we understand more about the ageing process and effects on it through research, frontline healthcare staff like nurses can help people apply this knowledge to ensure their quality of life, such as health promotion about lifestyle choices as we age. Solving the challenges of Australias future As the nature of Australias population changes, industries will nee d to adapt. And having skilled, innovative professionals in those industries will be the major reason why they will rise to the challenges ahead and ensure Australias ageing population gets the quality of life it deserves. List the most recent degree first, and go backwards from there. Include the name of the degree and the name and location of the school. If you graduated with high honors, definitely list it as this helps you stand out over other jobseekers. Also include coursework that may be especially relevant to the position.Typically the education section is at the end of the document. However, if your degree is from an esteemed law school, it may be advantageous to list your education towards the beginning of the resume. An attorney resume sample is a good place to see how you should format this important section.4. What is an example of a great attorney resume?A great attorney resume illuminates the most relevant skills and demonstrates to the employer why they should consider the applicant for the job. Start with a strong professional statement that points out a number of hard and soft skills and states your overall experience. Use action verbs to describe your accomplishments in the experience section, and include all important education information. Use bullet points and short statements so it is easy to read quickly. Consult an attorney resume sample to help construct an effective document.5. What should you do to make sure your attorney resume makes it past an ATS? Many employers use technology to help them sort through the multitude of resumes they receive. An Applicant Tracking System uses keywords to match the documents with what the company is looking for. They rank them accordingly, and employers only consider the highest-ranked applicants. There are a number of things you can do to increase your chances of making it through the ATS. It may seem obvious, but make sure you have no misspelled words. Implement exact phrases and words from the job description, and use a resume optimization tool. As a good attorney resume sample demonstrates, only include relevant information and keep the document simple and to the point.

In fact, studies show that sleep deficiency alters brain function in a way that hinders one’s ability to make decisions and solve problems,” she says. “It will affect your ability to multi-task, think creatively, react quickly, and remember facts. That is if you plan to sleep well at night. In fact, even one drink can have a negative impact on your sleeping. “A drink may put you to bed, but will make the hours you spend there less effective. Alcohol hinders the sleep cycle and promotes obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that not only robs you of quality sleep but has other serious medical consequences,” she says. For when you truly want - and need! - to rest, Magid says to skip the booze and turn to other effective ways to zen out: reading a book, taking a bath, snuggling w ith your number one, or practicing meditation techniques. You ignore snoringIf your loud roars in the wee hours of the morning are a constant point of contention with your partner, or anyone who shares a bed with you, why haven’t you done something about it yet? You might blame a stuffy cold or being tipsy on the reason you snore, but Magid says it’s not a habit to ignore since it can be a sign of a sleep apnea - a serious medical condition that not only impacts your work performance, but your overall health.“Sleep apnea is when the jaw and soft tissues block the airway while sleeping. The person’s body reacts much like choking. The blood pressure and heart rate go up and they wake up just enough to regain control of the muscles needed to open the airway and breath again,” she says. “While there will likely be no recollection of these events in the morning, these mini-arousals will disrupt the sleep cycle so that the deep, reparative stages are missed.”She adds that ma ny medical conditions, including heart attack, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, impotence, and depression can result from ignoring this illness.“Diagnosis can be as simple as a home sleep test. Treatment can range from a CPAP machine to a specially designed mouth guard made by a dentist who is trained in sleep,” she says. ASME Foundation and NASA to Launch Future Engineers Program

ASME Foundation and NASA to Launch “Future Engineers” Program ASME Foundation and NASA to Launch “Future Engineers” Program ASME Foundation and NASA to Launch “Future Engineers” Program The ASME Foundation has partnered with NASA on a new program that will give K-12 students the chance to design items that could ultimately be manufactured on the International Space Station. Through the new program, Future Engineers, the space agency and the Foundation will develop a series of 3D design challenges and curricula intended to inspire students to solve real-world exploration challenges. For the programs inaugural challenge, which launches in September, students will be asked to create 3D models specifically designed to be used in space. The winning design will be uplinked to a 3D printer on the International Space Station where the astronauts will print the part. In addition, the winning student will be invited to NASAs Payload Operations Center in Huntsville, Ala., to watch live as his or her item is printed in space. Announced last month at the White House Maker Faire, the Future Engineers project was conceived by a small team that included Deanne Bell, a mechanical engineer, ASME member and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) advocate. Bell, a member of the ASME Foundations Board of Directors, came up with the idea for the competition after watching an online video about the 3D Printing in Zero G Experiment, a joint venture between NASA and Made in Space Inc. to launch 3D printing equipment that can operate in microgravity on the space station. Bell then approached Made in Space and Niki Werkheiser, NASA 3D Printing in Zero-G project manager, with her concept. Niki embraced my half-formed idea for a single challenge and helped me build it into the Future Engineers inaugural program - a multi-year series of 3D space challenges in collaboration with NASA and the ASME Foundation, Bell said. As an ASME member myself, I know that ASME has perhaps the largest network of advanced manufacturing and 3D design experts in the world. It seemed like the perfect fit for a program aimed to teach students how to 3D model their ideas within the context of space manufacturing. The ASME Foundation proved to be a perfect choice, and their enthusiasm for the program was evident from day one. NASA and the ASME Foundation struck a partnership and I'm honored to be working with two of the most respected organizations in the world to inspire young minds. ASME member Deanne Bell, one of the team members who developed the Future Engineers K-12 program. Werkheiser, Bells Future Engineers collaborator, underscored the importance of encouraging young peoples interest in STEM and aerospace technology in particular. The students of today are the space travelers of tomorrow, she said. It is not someone working at NASA today that will first set foot on Mars. It is a student out there now who is excited about the science fair or designing new Lego creations or practicing for an upcoming math team competition. I can't fathom a better skill to have than to be able to wake up one morning imagining a new tool or part that you need and having the tools at hand to design it on your laptop, print it, and be using it by lunchtime! A Zero-G Technology 3D demonstration printer will launch to the station in early fall and will be the first printer to fly in space. It will produce an initial run of space station parts and tools to be tested, as well as print the Future Engineers competitions winning design. A permanent 3D printer, known as the Additive Manufacturing Facility, is in development and is expected to be installed on the ISS in the future. Made in Space's Jason Dunn and Mike Snyder assemble the 3D printer in their cleanroom. Bell noted that the ultimate goal of the program is to connect Future Engineers challenges and curriculum with educators, museums, after-school programs, and maker-capable facilities in local communities. It's a large endeavor, and the ASME Foundation will need further sponsors and supporters to fully realize these goals, she said. If you are interested in becoming an advocate for the program in your community or just want to stay in the know, sign up for our mailing list at www.futureengineers.org. The ASME Foundation funds and develops a variety of programs that support and advance the field of engineering. Individuals or companies who would like to support the Future Engineers program financially should contact Dora Nagy at the ASME Foundation by e-mail at nagyd@asme.org. To learn more about the Foundation, visit www.asme.org/about-asme/get-involved/asme-foundation. Niki Werkheiser, NASA 3D Printing in Zero-G project manager, worked with Deanne Bell on the creation of the Future Engineers program.

The Seru Method Is Changing Manufacturing

The Seru Method Is Changing Manufacturing The Seru Method Is Changing Manufacturing The Seru Method Is Changing Manufacturing Big, complicated, mass-produced products have long been made on the assembly line. And the assembly line, at its core, hasnt changed much since Henry Ford put it into swing. But in the early 1990s, the electronics industry started to change. High-tech products began to have much more variety and much shorter lifecycles. So the Japanese companies who dominated the electronics industry, like Canon and Sony, uprooted their assembly lines and switched to a production method they call seru. Theyre still using it now, but the method hasnt taken root in the U.S. Kathryn Stecke, a professor of operations management at The University of Texas at Dallas is trying to change that. Shes showing manufacturers the advantages of using the approach for high-cost, small-and-medium volume products. In short, seru is a kind of cellular assembly. Instead of having hundreds of people on a line, each with a seconds-long task, there are small groups of one to five highly trained workers who produce an entire product, or large portions of one. Example of a seru cell. Source: Miyake If youre newly hired, youre not assembling the whole product at first, says Stecke. You might be part of a three- or four-person line, and you learn maybe ten minutes worth of work. If youre fast enoughand with excellent qualityyou swap with another person, and learn what the next thing is. The result is a group of skilled employees capable of great flexibility who can turn out high-quality products and who can quickly switch to new products as they come along. And the expertise leads to worker pride. Individuals who complete an entire product might have their names stamped on it. There used to be much less variety and much longer product lifecycles in electronics, and then things changed, says Stecke. At smaller volumes, if youre changing over a line all the time youre losing a lot of time, plus conveyors take a lot of space. So basically assembly lines went away for electronics products and they were replaced with smaller cells that might be one person or a few people and it was almost like going back to trade manufacturing before Henry Fordbut with many differences. In Japan, the method has spread to other industries that dont turn out products on a massive scale. At Yamasaki, for instance, a single person, or a group of three, will build an entire motorcycle. In the U.S., though, few have heard of seru. Thats partly because theres no longer an electronics industry from which it could spread. And the few papers that have been written about seru production are in Chinese and Japanese. Mechanical engineers and manufacturing engineers dont know about seru yet because its not been written about in their journals yet. They just havent seen it. Any industry with high variety and medium volume is ripe for the seru method. Assembly is the biggest industry, says Stecke. Look around your office. Your tables, your chairs: Everything is assembled. All of those are candidates for something like a seru production system. Seru has the potential to do more than increase the qualityand profitsof products made here. It could help revive U.S. manufacturing. Our government, and many companies, would love to bring manufacturing back to the U.S. And thats what Japan did, says Stecke. With seru production they freed up space in their factories, they didnt have to outsource as much, and they brought production back from China. Thats what Japan did, and thats what we could do. Sure our labor costs might be more, but if were more efficient and we dont have quality problems and if production goes up and market share goes up, youre making up for that. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. For Further Discussion At smaller volumes, if youre changing over a line all the time youre losing a lot of timeplus conveyors take a lot of space.Prof. Kathryn Stecke, University of Texas at Dallas

You Have the Power to Fix Your Bad Boss - The Muse

You Have the Power to Fix Your Bad Boss - The Muse You Have the Power to Fix Your Bad Boss When it comes to liking your job, the way you feel about your manager could be the deciding factor. In fact, according to a recent employee engagement survey, 50% of people who quit identify their boss as the reason they left. This rings true for me. I’ve experienced both good and mediocre supervisors, as well as a few who made me want to rip my hair out. One created such misery that I was constantly devising my exit strategy. But before you turn yours into a scapegoat for all that goes wrong in your life, hear this: Blaming everything on her may be more comfortable, but the real problem could actually be you. Yes- you. You’re Assuming She Can Read Your Mind Two years ago, my company’s senior vice president and I were discussing a rough patch my team was going through. Because we had a good rapport (most likely because he supplied our office with the very best snacks), he had no problem being straightforward. “Look,” he said, “I can’t read your mind. I have no idea what you’re thinking. If you want something, you need to just say it.” I’ve repeated this advice to myself and others many times since then because it’s so spot on. Not only is your boss not a psychic (most likely), but she also isn’t sitting around all day attempting to decode your every move. Yes, part of her role is managing you, but she has other responsibilities, too. If you need help, ask. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, tell her. (This article lays out how to have that conversation.) If you’re disappointed she didn’t give you a promotion, discuss what you need to do to get one. Don’t wait for her to come to you about everything. You’ll just end up feeling frustrated and disgruntled. And nobody wants that. You’re Not Keeping Her in the Loop Shortly after starting a new position, my supervisor and I had an uncomfortable conversation. Another department’s director wasn’t thrilled with the quality of my work, and my manager wasn’t very happy. After sharing my side of the story, her understanding and support were a relief. But, of course, my initial thought when she called was Wow, I can’t believe she’s coming at me like this. But she’d felt blindsided. In our most recent one-on-one, I’d indicated that everything was “oh fine, just fine,” and then she heard something different. If you’re a team leader, it’s not fun when it appears as if your team isn’t up to snuff. Imagine if, instead, I’d said, “I’m struggling with this,” or, “I just wanted to give you a heads up about [insert issue].” She would’ve felt much more prepared to field complaints, and we probably could’ve avoided our awkward phone call. If you’re ever hesitant about bringing a potential (or definite) issue to light, just do it. It may not end up mattering, but if it does, it’s best to have it out in the open as early as possible. Your Performance Isn’t Up to Par This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, but if you’re dropping the ball, your boss probably won’t react very favorably. She may lose confidence in you and not assign you to new projects. Or put you on a performance improvement plan. She may never give you a raise or a promotion. And hey, she may even demote you. (Womp womp.) None of these scenarios is preferable. Or joyful. And any of them may make you want to endlessly grumble about how utterly horrible she is. But if you’re missing deadlines, half-assing your assignments, or goofing off all day, it isn’t her fault. It’s yours. Try to view yourself (as an employee) objectively. Is there anything you could be doing better? Are there any areas requiring more effort or fine-tuning? If you improve what you can control, she may start to react more positively. And, alas, you may realize you don’t hate her so much after all. You’re Letting Your Personal Feelings Get in the Way The truth is, you just aren’t a big fan of her. Her laugh is too high-pitched, she always heats up fish in the microwave, and her communication style’s a little too blunt for you. And because she’s not your cup of tea, every single thing she does is wrong. Even if it really isn’t. That email she sent to your colleague wasn’t actually a waste of time, you just thought it was because she sent it. Basically, you’re letting your personal feelings about her taint your opinions about her work. You need to separate your feelings about her personality and mannerisms from the job at hand. Because while you may not want to hang out with her on the weekend or invite her to your birthday happy hour, that doesn’t mean she’s a bad manager. And until you remove that judgmental lens you’re viewing her through, you’re just sabotaging yourself. The boss-employee relationship can be tough, and it seems practically innate to moan and groan about the person you report to every day. But when there are factors in your control, you should try to change them instead of playing the victim. Before you label her your archenemy, make sure you’re not guilty of any of the above.

Soft Robotic Muscle May Lead to Lifelike Robots

Soft Robotic Muscle May Lead to Lifelike Robots Soft Robotic Muscle May Lead to Lifelike Robots Soft Robotic Muscle May Lead to Lifelike Robots Researchers at Columbia Engineering believe they have cracked the code to one of the biggest challenges in creating untethered soft robots, a breakthrough that could add new functionality and capabilities to tomorrows machines. A group in the Creative Machines Lab led by Hod Lipson, professor of mechanical engineering at Columbia University, has developed a synthetic soft muscle tissue that doesnt require an external compressor or high-voltage equipment to expand, as previous artificial muscles had. Soft robots are of special interest for situations from factory assembly lines to medical care to home care, where robots are in direct contact with humans. Without a strong soft muscle, there is a limit to how much you can do with soft robotics, Lipson says. The self-contained soft actuator exhibits characteristics inherent in natural muscles but is three times stronger. It has a high strain, up to 900 percent, and can lift weight about 1,700 times greater than its own. The actuator is electrically activated and lightweight. To achieve those characteristics, a quest that has eluded many researchers in the past, the team used a simple combination of inexpensive, readily available and environmentally friendly materials. Composite material for the soft actuator is prepared by mixing ethanol with silicone elastomer. Image: Columbia University They started with nonhazardous silicone elastomer, which costs about three cents per gram and is easy to 3D print, and embedded it with tiny micro-bubbles filled with ethanol. When heated by a low-voltage current running through a thin wire, the alcohol begins to boil at 78.4 Celsius and releases gas. That causes the silicone material to expand. Lipson cannot point to any systematic study that led the team to the result. It was a matter of trying various materials with a variety of elastic and other properties. The researchers were looking for materials that were easy to fabricate, food-safe and biocompatible. I have to say the end result is almost trivial. What we found is something you could do years ago. There is no high tech in it, Lipson says. Its sort of lots of tiny steam engines embedded into a material. When heated up, they all produce a vapor and expand. One thing thats important to us is that its 3D printable, which brings together two important trends: actuation soft robotics and printable robots. Most soft robots in the past have been connected to large compressors, moved only tiny amounts, and produced weak forces. Our soft functional material may possibly revolutionize the way that soft robotic solutions are engineered today, says Aslan Miriyev, postdoctoral researcher in Lipsons lab and lead author of a recent paper describing the study in Nature Communications. Although a field of interest for decades, Lipson says soft robotics has been stuck in a corner of what is possible in robotics because we didnt have the right kind of manufacturing tools, so 99.9% of all robots today are rigid machines made out of steel or metal and are very different than biology. In biology, everything is very soft and has incredible capabilities that we dont have with real robots. The researchers 3D-printed the muscle in the shape they desired and activated it by passing low current through a wire coiled within it. Using computer controls, the autonomous unit can perform a variety of motion tasks. It can push, pull, bend, twist, and lift weight, Miriyev says. Its the closest artificial material equivalent we have to a natural muscle. The team still needs to solve two other major challenges. While the muscle is very strong, has high strain, and is lightweight, it is also slow. You cant play the piano with a muscle like this, Lipson says. It takes anywhere from ten seconds to a minute to expand to its whole capacity. The second issue is longevity. Unless enclosed in a hard shell, which is not desirable, it begins to degrade over time, a bit like natural muscle, Lipson said. These are things we still need to solve, Lipson noted. The team is also working to make the material slightly conductive so that current will pass throughout the entire muscle and gently heat everything. For the study recently published, the researchers used an attached wire because thats the simplest way to actuate it, but the team believes there are better ways to apply heat. If the material is conductive, then you can just print the whole thing without worrying about the wire so that makes it simpler also, Lipson said. As for a timetable or roadmap, Lipson says, Im a delusional optimist. I thought when I started my career around 2001 that it would take me one or two years maximum. It has turned out to be a bit trickier. We have goals but the path is uncertain. For most projects we are sailing west. We dont know where we end, but the direction is promising. Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Without a strong soft muscle, there is a limit to how much you can do with soft robotics.Prof. Hod Lipson, Columbia University
